Installing a Window Air Conditioner
The manufacturer should always include detailed instructions on how to install a window air conditioner. These instructions are generally specific to the exact unit you are installing. The installation procedure below should be read as a general guideline on what to expect. Always follow the manufacturer instructions when installing a unit for proper and safe operation.
Step 1:Assemble any parts to the air conditioner such as the curtain rail or supporting curtain rail frame. Install the air filter and make sure the air conditioner is ready to operate. Leave the unit unplugged at this point.
Step 2:Verify that the plug at the nearest electrical outlet can be used with the window air conditioner. Generally, this circuit should be a dedicated circuit for the air conditioner. This is a good idea for most all large household appliances.

Step 3:Prepare the window for installation of the air conditioner. The manufacturer will provide a mounting bracket to locate the air conditioner. In some cases they may just make some recommendations for adding some wood pieces to the window sill and some minor brackets. If you are missing the brackets for the air conditioner aftermarket brackets can be purchased. These are generally made to adapt to a variety of units. However, it is prudent to verify that the bracket will work with your air conditioner before purchasing.
Step 4:After all necessary modifications to the window sill and the mounting brackets are added load the air conditioner onto the center of the sill. The final installation should tilt the unit up at a very slight angle. This lets the condensate drain to the outside of the window. If the unit was leaning into the room the condensate may drain into the house, which is not desirable.
Step 5:Once the unit is mounted securely to the window sill the curtains can be secured to the window sash and sill. Pull the window down on top of the unit, the unit should have come with a seal gasket that is to be placed inbetween the top of the unit and the window as it comes down. Pull the curtains out from the side of the unit so that no airflow paths are left open between the inside and outside. Once, this is completed the window air conditioner curtains can be secured as directed. Plug in the window air conditioner and enjoy the cool air.
