Select Unit Size based on Square Footage to be Cooled:

Add these factors when they are applicable:

• Add 500 BTU per person that is a regular occupant of the room.
• Add 4,000 BTU if the unit is located in a kitchen.
• For sunny rooms add 10% to the BTU, for very shaded rooms subtract 10% BTU.
• For not well insulated/drafty rooms add 10% BTU.
• For rooms with ceilings above 8ft. add additional capacity.

Additional Recommendations:

• The EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures the units efficiency.  When comparing units with the same cooling capacity the unit with the higher EER will cost less to operate.
• Air conditioners have filters the need to be cleaned or replaced regularly.  Keeping the filters clean will save energy and money.
